Seasonal Education ProgramsTrout in the Classroom

LWA is pleased to offer a variety of seasonal educational programs throughout the year on appropriate watershed issues. All programs are offered free to the public, and are geared for the entire family to enjoy. Upcoming programs will be featured on the "Upcoming Events" page.

Trout in the Classroom
Trout in the Classroom is a hands-on program offered by LWA in cooperation with Forbes Trail Trout Unlimited that gives students the unique opportunity to raise native brook trout in their junior high school classrooms.  During the seven month program, students learn about and care for the young fish in a sophisticated aquarium set up in their classroom as they develop from eggs to fingerling trout.  The program engages students and helps to better connect them to the importance of good water quality, healthy watersheds, current fish and wildlife issues, while inspiring them to seek real-life solutions.  Seventh grade students from Ligonier Valley Middle School and Greater Latrobe Area Junior High School currently participate in the program.
Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Program
Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Program

The macroinvertebrate monitoring program has grown by leaps and bounds since it began in the spring of 2004. LWA is pleased to offer   stream-side and classroom programs geared for middle-high school students in nearby school districts. Students have the opportunity to perform kick-netting collection techniques, and learn basic identification of many aquatic "critters." Water quality tests on stream pH and dissolved oxygen are also performed.
LWA and Your Community
LWA staff members have the ability to share great activities and information with you! If you are looking for a special speaker for your students, club, youth group, or scout troop, please contact us. LWA will bring programs about watersheds, electronics recycling, and water ecology directly to you, as our scheduling permits.
Youth Conservation Corps (YCC)
Youth Conservation CorpsEach summer, six students are hired to tackle conservation projects throughout Forbes State Forest and Linn Run State Park. Funded by the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation, the program has been providing conservation work opportunities for area youth for more than 20 years. It is a unique summer employment opportunity for high school students interested in environmental careers. Applications are accepted each February from students ages 16-18.  Participating students must reside in or attend schools within the Ligonier Valley, Greater Latrobe, or Derry Area School Districts.
